Active Mission Projects

Together with other volunteers from the community, members of the four Moravian churches on Staten Island partner in a variety of mission projects.  These projects help us meet practical needs in the larger community.  For more information about our Active Mission Projects also known as 'Moravians In Mission,' contact the host church.  You will find a description of each project below.

In addition to our regular Active Mission Projects, we are developing a new ministry called "Moravian Community Dinners."  In these times of economic stress and uncertaintly, we need opportunities to support each other in community, to eat together, and to network.  The community meals are free and open to the public.  See the Calendar of Events for the next community dinners at our SI Moravian Churches.

Community Garden - Located on the grounds at Castleton Hill Moravian Church, the SI Moravian Community Garden has 33 garden plots and is handicap accessible.  The garden provides space for volunteers to grow their own food to take home and also provides space to grow herbs and vegetables for Project Hospitality.  During the 2008 garden season, we sent 1,092 pounds of produce to Project Hospitalitys soup kitchen and food pantry.  For more information contact Castleton Hill Moravian, 718-442-5215.

Clothing Distribution - We collect clean, gently used clothing during March, April, and early May.  In May we sort and box up the clothing until August when we hold a public clothing distribution at Brighton Heights Reformed Church.  In 2008, we served 545 individuals and 145 families.  For information, contact Castleton Hill Moravian Church, 718-442-5215.

Feeding The Faith On the first Wednesday of each month, we cook food for the Positive Living Dinners at Project Hospitality.  This service provides about 50 HIV/AIDS cleints with a healthy meal once a month.  Since 2005, this project has provided over 1,8000 meals.  For more information, contact Castleton Hill Moravian Church, 718-442-5215.

Prayer Shawl Ministry - Members of our prayer shawl ministry knit and crochet prayer shawls for persons going through times of sickness, crisis, and trasition.  For information about helping to make shawls or about receiving a shawl, contact Great Kills Moravian Church, 718-317-7788.

Trips to the Gulf Coast - Committed to help rebuild from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, work teams go down to the Gulf Coast for week-long mission trips.  Participants help in the clean-up and reconstruction effort.  For more information about the next mission trip, contact Great Kills Moravian Church, 718-317-7788.

Yoga - Reducing our stress and staying limber and healthy is a real need in today's anxious and fast-paced world.  Contact Great Kills Moravian Church, 1-718-317-7788 for more information about yoga classes.

Thanksgiving Baskets - Our churches collect non-perishable food items all through the fall.  We use these contributions to fill around 90 baskets which are given out to families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.  Contact New Dorp Moravian CHurch, 718-351-0090 for more information.
